The Cradle of Canada: immersing yourself in the history of Gaspé

In Gaspé, history doesn't sleep in museum cases. It walks the wharves, sings in the taverns, prints its words the old-fashioned way, and comes alive every week in the heart of Canada's Cradle. Located on the edge of the bay, this must-see site invites visitors to step back in time... while remaining firmly anchored in the present.

Three ways to visit, a thousand stories to discover

Whether you're just passing through for an hour or a whole day, there are many ways to explore this place steeped in memory:

  • On your own, at your own pace, strolling between heritage buildings, quays and interpretation facilities.
  • Accompanied by a guide in period costume, immerse yourself in the vivid stories of the people who shaped Gaspé.
  • Thanks to the brand-new web application, which offers an interactive tour of the site, enriched with historical content, audio documents, video capsules and quizzes.

And if everyone knows Jacques Cartier and the famous cross planted in 1534, the Cradle of Canada invites you to discover often little-known aspects of Gaspesian history: life in the general stores, the first docks at Pointe O'Hara, cod fishing, the war in Gaspésie, the free port, whaling. Powerful stories, rooted in a land shaped by the sea, work and encounters.

A program that brings history to life until October

Here, history isn't just told, it's celebrated. Until October 31, the Berceau du Canada becomes a stage, a gallery, a workshop and a meeting place. Every week, a new activity brings the place to life: shows, exhibitions, exchanges and traditions come together in an atmosphere that's as lively as it is unifying.

Desjardins Evenings

All summer long, the Berceau du Canada becomes an open-air stage where music takes center stage. Set against a unique maritime backdrop, these open-air concerts bring together people from near and far for a variety of performances. Each evening is an opportunity to vibrate to the rhythm of the land, with the wind in your hair and a light heart.

The Rencontres internationales de la photographie en Gaspésie exhibition

Throughout the summer, the site hosts a selection of large-format works from the Rencontres internationales de la photographie en Gaspésie. Installed outdoors, the photos interact with the landscape, heritage buildings and history of the site. The exhibition invites contemplation, reflection and a different view of the world around us.

Baker's Tavern 5 à 7

The carefully restored former tavern on the site is the venue for the Tuesday citizens' meetings. Over a glass of wine and a chat on topics of the past and present: culture, heritage, the environment, living memory... The atmosphere is relaxed, warm and conducive to discussion and encounters.

The tavern is open daily from 12:30 to 19:30. With its sunny terrace, snacks and microbrewery beers, it's also the perfect place to take a break, have a drink and enjoy the site at your own pace.

Véronique Bouchard's printing workshops

On Fridays and Sundays, the on-site print shop comes to life under the expert hands of passionate craftswoman Véronique Bouchard. Visitors can see a vintage press in operation, discover the secrets of manual printing, handle lead letters and leave with an original creation. A fun and educational activity, at the crossroads of history, craft and transmission, and a unique opportunity to literally put pen to ink!

A place to learn and be moved

The Cradle of Canada is much more than a historic site. It's a living, accessible and inspiring place, where the past speaks and the present comes alive. Whether you're a history buff, culture lover or simply looking for a moment of beauty by the water, you'll leave here with memories... and a desire to return.

Not to be missed this summer, and through to late autumn!

Gaspé sustainable destination

Sustainable development at the heart of our destination

Escale Gaspé is committed to making sustainable development a central, cross-cutting element of its strategic planning. It is aligned with Croisières du Saint-Laurent's Sustainable Development Strategy and shares its vision for the St. Lawrence destination.

The cruise industry contributes to the socio-economic vitality of Quebec and its regions, while helping to preserve and regenerate ecosystems. The St. Lawrence destination offers a human and sustainable experience with a positive impact, through the bridges we build between visitors and host communities, maritime, tourism and scientific players.

Escale Gaspé has taken action in recent years in terms of sustainable tourism development. It has equipped its cruise lodge with waste-sorting islands and a boutique showcasing local products. It also broadcasts sustainable and responsible tourism awareness content for cruise passengers, via a screen located in its pavilion.

The organization also rolled out its first-ever stakeholder consultation forum in spring 2025, participates regularly in the sustainable tourism best-practice sharing community Les Courants Durables du Saint-Laurent, and takes part in a social acceptability campaign run by Croisières du Saint-Laurent.

Destination Gaspé's brand-new, optimized website also stimulates the local economy and enhances the tourism offering by improving the visibility and appeal of local businesses. It offers a modern, engaging showcase on a centralized platform, while integrating rich content linked to local stories and the region's unique cultural events.
